Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream and i.c.stars 'dares to dream.' Each year, on MLK Day, i.c.stars brings these two together, inviting its supporters, alumni and their families to consider King's legacy and to become agents of change in their communities.
This year, more than 100 i.c.stars stakeholders including technology, business and community leaders, government and academic representatives and their families will celebrate achievements of i.c.stars interns, alumni, staff, board, employers, volunteers, sponsors and their families.
The day begins with a reading of King's "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech. Attendees will then examine facets of leadership and community service through a series of inspiring, mini-courses on change, vision, impact and other topics.
While adults attend the courses their children will work with local artists to create a performance to be shared at the end of the morning.
The keynote speaker will be Steve Casey, Board President of Fresh Moves. Fresh Moves outfitted a former CTA bus as a fresh-produce, fruits and vegetable store. The service offers residents of the Austin and North Lawndale communities easy access to healthy foods at affordable prices Tuesdays through Fridays.
In addition, enjoy courses on:
