A critical success factor for Walt and his team was how Motorola's IT organization synchronized with the business not only in the traditional categories of consumption reduction and rate reduction but also initiated a business process simplification effort. Their strategy was simple; by simplifying business processes, Motorola Mobile Devices Business would benefit from improved global coordination of services and IT had unique opportunities to transform its cost structure. And they were right on target.

In addition, Walt will share details of their Google Apps deployment at Motorola Mobile Devices Business. They moved over 15,000 employees in over 100 global locations to a cloud-based email and document collaboration platform. This effort produced some surprising results.

Please join us on January 21st when Walt will share his strategy related to these significant events, discuss the eDiscovery and security issues, and reveal some unexpected results from these business process changes and cost reduction efforts.

The CIO Executive Leadership Roundtable

Topic:   Transforming IT into a Highly Valued Business Partner

When:   Friday, December 4, 2009 7:30am - 1:00pm

Who:   Timothy Kasbe, CIO, Sears Holdings Management Corporation, Harry M. Jansen Kraemer, Jr., Executive Partner, Madison Dearborn Partners, LLC and former Chairman and CEO of Baxter International, Inc.

Leadership Panel: Transformational Leaders - Who Are They, How Do They Do It and What Are The Required Skills?

Changing from being a transaction oriented CIO/business leader to a transformational leader is a significant mindset change. The transformational CIO/business leader needs a strategic technology vision as well as a deep understanding of the various businesses within the business, and of the competitive landscape outside the business. For success, the transformation leader needs to meld people with lean processes and enabling technologies to fuel growth, increase productivity and achieve competitive advantage. The leader must work on all three key levels -- people, process, and technology -- with a deep understanding of each in order to achieve a transformational business model that supports and drives the business.

  • Credibility with the CEO. Joined at the head rather than the hip – of one mind with the CEO.
  • Superior communication skills.
  • Ability to look right across the business and into the future
  • Ability to look at the enterprise, create a five-year horizon and then ask what innovations do we need to make now that in five years will be driving this business?

With the addition of leaders who possess a deep understanding of the business and the competitive environment, true technological change becomes possible. But who are such transformational executives, how do they do it and how do I gain the skills needed to become such a leader?

Bring your CIO/IT leader colleagues to the Roundtable.

CIO Invitational Breakfast Roundtable

When:   Friday, November 6, 2009 7:30am - 10:00am

Where:   Ritz-Carlton Chicago, 160 East Person Street at Water Tower Place

The Chicago Chapter of the Society of Information Management and Geneca present an interactive breakfast round-table on Preparing for Economic Recovery: Will your IT Projects Deliver the Impact You Need?

Although the economy and marketplace continue to throw us curveballs, most economists agree the recovery has started. With a positive outlook ahead, the focus of most organizations turns to technology-fueled growth strategies.

The ability of the business to effectively communicate its needs to IT can play a key role in recovery. Unfortunately, this is often not the case. Many IT projects are delivered surprisingly far out of alignment with business expectations. The objective of this limited-invitation only breakfast event is to share experiences and practices to help business and IT leaders keep IT projects on track with business objectives.

This Senior IT Leadership program will be a great opportunity for you to mix and mingle with fellow CIOs from around the Chicago area. Two leading Chicago CIOs and two of their Business counterparts will discuss insights and issues as to how they have/are addressing theses challenges.

Although formal invitations will be going out shortly, we want to make sure you have this event on your radar—you won't want to miss it!

Don't forget to mark your calendars!

The format of this event is the following: We are reaching out to 18 area CIO’s to sponsor a hole together with a vendor/partner of their choice. Sponsorship of each hole is $1,000-$1,200. We also are partnering with major corporations to be Premier, Gold, and Bronze sponsors to support specific activities across the entire event. The goal this year is to elevate the CIO participation from past years, and bring out prominent business leaders throughout the Chicagoland area to support the terrific work that i.c.stars does in developing IT leaders for the future.

Please join us in participating in this worthwhile event to support two fine organizations in the Chicago area – The Society for Information Management (SIM), and i.c.stars.
