Meet the 2019 SIM Chicago CIO of the Year
Danielle DuMerer, former CIO & Commissioner of the Department of Innovation and Technology, City of Chicago
Join SIM Chicago for a personal, in-depth discussion with Danielle DuMerer, former CIO of the City of Chicago, who has recently chosen as the 2019 CIO of the Year by SIM Chicago, AITP and the Executives Club of Chicago. Nominations were made by CxOs and senior business & IT executives, and all judging and elections were done by peers in the IT community.
In her role as CIO for City’s Department of Innovation and Technology, Danielle led a team working to improve how residents interact with government by creating more responsive and accessible digital services. DoIT is responsible for the City’s core technology infrastructure, enterprise applications, data management & analytics, and information security; DoIT partners with other City departments to leverage data and technology to improve operations and service delivery.
The role of the City’s CIO runs broad and deep. Supporting vast technology requirements for over 2.7 million residents, 31 different City departments, 50 Ward City Council men & women, as well as, the office of the City’s Mayor, present clear challenges and opportunities. Danielle brought a vision and leadership to this role was successful in many ways, most notably
- Modernizing the City’s non-emergency 311 system buy building a mobile app system based on input from focus group across diverse neighborhoods.·
- Implementing the Array of Things in partnership with U of Chicago and Argonne National Lab to deploy network of sensors nodes to measure the impact of livability in City neighborhoods.
- Creating an IT Governing Strategy across 31 departments to ensure alignment with City priorities
- Implementing creative ways to keep her diverse IT talent from turnover. Danielle has envious statistics, 39% of her staff are minority, while 40% of her staff are female
Danielle holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Maryland, College Park and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
