Skill 6: Engages Others (Series 6) (Leaders must have followers.) The five attributes of an engaging leader are: - Approachable: This means employees, colleagues and even bosses view you as someone they can talk to with little, if any, hesitation. One way to be approachable is to manage by walking around.
- Confidently Humble: These leaders are the ones others turn to because of their confidence and wisdom. They are the last one to tell you how great they are. They share projects, information, failures, and successes giving
credit where credit is due.
- Belief in Service: To serve others means to understand their interests, their underlying motivations and what they really offer. To serve sometimes means to go deeper and uncover what is really going on, so that where you lead them is where they really want to go. This attribute allows leaders to recognize that their power and influence is directly related to their ability to serve others. Service-first leaders understand and embrace the natural human desire to feel important and draw energy, power, and influence from the fact that they do listen, understand, and consider. They serve others through their leadership and impact.
- Rapport and Trust Builder: This attribute is found in a leader that takes the time to get to know and listen to those around them and build up the proverbial “goodwill”. These leaders know that the individuals they work with and lead will do more for them, go to greater lengths, and be more engaged and productive. People do business with people they like. It is that simple. As the old saying goes, people do not leave companies, they leave people.
- Genuine Interest in Others: People see through you if you are not genuinely interested in them. They can sense your attention wandering and your eyes drifting.
As a SIM CIO member there is no cost for this series for up to four future leaders of the member CIO. Space is limited!
