SIM Chicago Charities

This #GivingTuesday, we've put together a list of suggested charities that SIM Chicago works with regularly for you to choose from.

Comp-U-Dopt

The pandemic requires remote instruction for Chicago Public Schools students. Low-income families are desperate for computers for their children. You may have a laptop that you can donate, or even better, your company may have many laptops that can be put towards this need. We ask that you do not wait until November to help out, since the need is so critical now. See  https://www.compudopt.org/chicago.

No computer to donate? Monetary donations are needed to defray the cost of refurbishment: https://www.compudopt.org/donationsEnter “SIM-Chicago” in the comments.

i.c.stars
We are looking for several SIM members to participate in virtual “High Teas”, where you share your career story for 15 to 20 minutes with interns looking to break into the technology world.

You can learn more at  https://www.icstars.org/tea/ but please email Amanda Moore  at  amanda@icstars.org  i f you are interested, since registration using the website will not work for November 2 thru 6, having been set aside exclusively for SIM-Chicago members.

DePaul and Loyola Universities
Volunteer to be a test interviewer or a resume reviewer. College students need all the guidance they can get to prepare for the business world. To fit with students’ needs, this activity may require scheduling outside the month of November.

For DePaul, contact:   philanthropy@sim-chicago.org
For Loyola, contact James Connon:   jconnon@luc.edu

Feed My Starving Children
Volunteer to help pack food for needy children around the world. New procedures permit work stations of 1 to 5 people, only. Yes, that means you can do all the jobs by yourself, if you’re game!

Otherwise people living together make the most sense for a group at any one station, so consider involving your family! Volunteer at one of the three Illinois sites (Schaumburg, Aurora or Libertyville) for a date in November 2020 and regsiter at   https://www.fmsc.org/get-involved/volunteer a nd when you create a group, include SIM as part of the name.

Monetary donations are needed, too https://give.fmsc.org/give/76206/#!/donation/checkout  and select In Honor of SIM-Chicago.

Habitat for Humanity
Construction projects in DuPage County have restarted, but only with a maximum of five workers, all of whom must follow COVID protocols for masks and personal distancing. All members of a work group must be at least 18 years of age.  See https://dupagehabitat.galaxydigital.com/need/detail/?need_id=541042 and follow instructions to create an account and register for a work day.  If you create a group, include “SIM” in the name.

Alternatively, funds are needed to support construction activities.  See https://dupagehabitatforhumanity.rallybound.org/resiliency-fund/Donate.  Make sure to say, “On behalf of SIM-Chicago” in the message box.
